What
is placer gold?
Placer gold
has been mined in the Keno-Mayo area since the early 1900's. Today,
gold dust and nuggets are still being sluiced out of the gravels using
more modern mining systems. Gold dust and small size nuggets are melted
into bars for processing by refineries, but much of the larger gold nuggets
are used by local craftsmen to make all types of jewelry. The rarity and
unique character of each nugget naturally formed by the long process of
erosion makes each piece so attractive.
